The shipping coordinator’s TMS auto-quotes both options every Monday: LTL at around $1,450, full truckload at around $3,200. LTL wins on the spreadsheet every time. What is the difference between LTL and FTL?

LTL ships partial loads on shared trailers through carrier terminals; FTL ships your load alone on a dedicated trailer direct from origin to destination. The two models use different equipment, different handling chains, and different pricing structures. They are not the same service at different sizes, though both ride the trucking sector that carries the majority of the nation’s freight by value, according to American Trucking Associations industry data.

The defining difference is exclusive use of the trailer. FTL gives you it. LTL doesn’t.

When does LTL cost less than FTL?

LTL is cheaper than FTL when your load occupies less than about 40 to 50% of a 53-foot trailer (roughly 12 standard pallets or 24,000 pounds), the lane has good LTL carrier coverage, your freight class is favorable (lower classes price better), and the receiver tolerates a delivery-day window with terminal handling.

The flip happens around 6 to 10 pallets on most lanes. Below that, LTL almost always wins on rate. Above 12 pallets, FTL usually wins because LTL accessorials and density-based pricing erode the savings.

When to use LTL vs FTL

Use LTL when

  • Freight is palletized, sturdy, and tolerates terminal handling
  • Receiver has a dock and tolerates a delivery-day window
  • Total weight is under ~10,000 pounds and freight class is 70 or lower
  • The load doesn’t include high-value, fragile, or time-critical components
  • Lane volume is steady and predictable, not surge-driven

Use FTL when

  • Load fills more than 50% of a 53-foot trailer (12+ pallets or 24,000+ pounds)
  • Freight is high-value, fragile, oversize, or sensitive to handling
  • Receiver demands a fixed-hour delivery window or chain of custody
  • Lane has known LTL terminal damage or transit-time problems
  • Total cost-of-failure (chargebacks, scorecards, replacement) makes terminal handling an unacceptable risk
  • Multiple stops are needed in the same trailer (multi-stop FTL)

When to use partial truckload or expedited instead

Some loads sit between LTL and FTL, too big for cost-effective LTL but not big enough to justify a full trailer at standard FTL rates. Partial truckload (also called volume LTL or shared truckload) gives those shippers dedicated trailer space without paying for the whole truck. When the deadline is tighter than either standard tier can hit, expedited freight is the right service.

Is LTL really cheaper, or just front-loaded cheap?

  • If the load is 1 to 6 pallets and the lane is routine → use LTL

Common failure points: an LTL rate looks 60% cheaper but the freight class on the BOL is wrong and the rebill closes the gap; the load grew from 4 pallets to 9 pallets over the past year and nobody re-quoted FTL; the receiver started demanding fixed-hour appointments six months ago and LTL transit can’t reliably hit them; declared value coverage was never added because the original quote didn’t ask.

The fix is a quarterly lane review, not just rate, but damage rate, reclass rate, accessorial frequency, and receiver feedback. Every load type has a tier where it belongs, and lanes drift over time.

What you need to make the right LTL vs FTL call

The decision is only as good as the data behind it. Have these on hand:

  • Average and peak pallet counts per shipment on the lane, not just typical
  • Pallet dimensions and weight measured for density calculation, not estimated

  • Damage rate on the lane over the last 12 months, by carrier, by service tier

  • Receiver appointment requirements: day-window vs fixed-hour

  • Declared value of the freight and what coverage you’d want at full replacement
  • Cost-of-delay on the receiver side, chargebacks, scorecards, account risk
  • Lane volume trend: is this growing toward FTL territory or shrinking toward LTL
